Physical Layer Medium Dependent Sublayer on 650 nm Fibre Optics

PROFINET

Description:

The present PROFINET technical specification "100 Mb/s Physical Layer Medium Dependent Sublayer on 650 nm Fibre Optics" defines a 100 Mb/s Fast Ethernet compatible application using short wavelength (650 nm) signalling for data transmission on plastic optical fibre (POF) and plastic clad fibre (PCF).
The specification is based on the fundamental requirements of ISO/IEC 9314-3:1990 (FDDI PMD), ANSI/TIA/EIA-785-2001 (100BASE-SX) and of ISO/IEC 8802-3 [IEEE 802.3-2000] 100BASE-FX.

ISO/IEC 9314-3: 1990 will be referred to as FDDI PMD, ANSI/TIA/EIA-785-2001 will be referred to as 100BASE-SX and ISO/IEC 8802-3 [IEEE 802.3-2000] will be referred to as 100BASE-FX throughout this document.

Within the FDDI PMD and 100BASE-FX provides the specifications for 100 Mb/s Fast Ethernet compatible applications using 1310 nm wavelength signalling over glass fibre while 100BASE-SX provides the specifications for 100 Mb/s Fast Ethernet compatible applications using 850nm wavelength signalling over glass fibre.

This PROFINET technical specification is part of the PROFINET physical layer specification and should be used in conjunction with the guideline for PROFINET "PROFINET Cabling and Interconnection Technology" and installation profile CPF3 of IEC 61784-5-3.

The purpose and intent of this technical specification is to provide a clear, simple, and inexpensive use of POF and PCF for 100 Mb/s Fast Ethernet applications using short wavelength of 650 nm. The PMD characteristics are outlined in clause 5 of this guideline, with other references listed in clause 4.

This PROFINET technical specification is intended to be used by manufacturers of PROFINET devices.
